No. 6 – Spaghetti Meat Sauce Recipe

Notes by Naly on Substack

Spaghetti is a loved dish in my kitchen with lots of shaved parmesan cheese on top. It’s a simple and filling meal with plenty of leftovers for busy work weeks.

This recipe is a great starting point for a homemade spaghetti sauce recipe that can be modified to your liking. You can also use this meat sauce as a topping on garlic bread. Top with cheese and it’s a great food for watching football.

Spaghetti Recipe - Notes by Naly

One of my hobbies is cooking in the kitchen while listening to music. After a day of working on the laptop all day, cooking is relaxing to me. What relaxes you after work?

Something about chopping, slicing, frying, steaming, and more that appeals to the senses. Best of all, we can enjoy the completed homemade meal after. It’s one path into how I learn more about food, cultures, music, and ideas for stories or writings.

If you’re interested in learning my spaghetti recipe, hope you enjoy this note!

Ingredients:

Spaghetti Meat Sauce

Start by placing a deep pot on the stove with a medium to high flame.

Dice a whole onion, garlic, carrot, and celery stick before placing in the pot with olive oil. Sauté the vegetable medley until it softens and becomes translucent. Lightly salt the vegetables.

Add the ground beef into the pot and break the meat apart. Let it cook for a good 15 to 20 minutes with the lid on. Lightly salt and pepper the beef.

When the meat is nearly 3/4 of the way done, add the four cans of tomato sauce to the pot. Add the bay leaf, thyme, oregano, coriander powder, rosemary, sugar, and dry red pepper flakes to the pot.

Bring the sauce to a bubbling mix of goodness and then put the lid on. Lower the stove flame so we can let it simmer for 30 minutes. Check on it every now and then, stirring so nothing crusts at the bottom.

Bring another pot of water to a boil and cook the spaghetti noodles of your choice.

Follow the package cooking instructions. Drain the noodles and put aside.

Monitor the spaghetti sauce until 30 minutes passes.

I enjoy this traditional sauce as is, but sometimes I’m feeling a bit more adventurous to mix it up. Popular additions are basil leaves and red wine, and recently I learned about white wine in the sauce. Have you ever tried that?

Sometimes, I like to add 1 tsp of soy sauce to this recipe for a slightly saltier and deeper flavor. If it’s available, I’ll sometimes add cumin seeds along with the dry herbs.

What do you like on your spaghetti? Let me know so I can try it too.
